Frequently Asked Questions

When should we look for a celebrant?
When you have decided on the date, time and place of the wedding. Don’t leave it too late, as good celebrants are booked well in advance, and you want to make sure they are available for your big day.

Is there a minimum age to be married?
Yes, you must be at least 18 years of age. You will require approval from a Magistrate or a Judge if one member of the couple is over 16, but less than 18.

How much notice do I have to give?
The Marriage Act states at least one calendar month's notice must be given.

Do we have to get a marriage licence?
No, you are not required to have a marriage licence in Australia. However, you are required to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage form, which is completed by me and lodged after the wedding. This is the form that requires one calendar month's notice.

What happens if I have been married before?
I will require to sight the legal documents recording the dissolution of your prior marriage. This information is recorded on the Notice of Intended Marriage form.

My previous husband / wife passed away. What do I need to do?
I will require to sight the Death Certificate of your former spouse. This information is also recorded on the Notice of Intended Marriage form.

Can we have a wedding rehearsal?
Yes, you certainly can. This is carried out by the celebrant one or two weeks prior to your wedding.

Do you write the wedding ceremony, or do we?
It depends on what each individual requires. Some couples provide the whole wedding ceremony without any input from me. However, other couples may not be sure of what they want. It is up to me to assist them with whatever aspect of the ceremony they require. There are also legal components which must be included in the ceremony, and I will be able to assist you with this aspect.

How long is the ceremony?
The time varies according to the content of the ceremony, however 20 minutes is usually about how long it takes. If the ceremony includes several readings, or rituals, then it could take 30 minutes.

What happens if we want music during the ceremony?
You can provide CD’s for playing on the day. However, I provide the PA system and CD player for this purpose. Music is usually played prior to the bride’s arrival, during the signing of documentation and after the married couple is presented to family and friends.

How do I sign the marriage certificates etc. (bride)?
You sign with the usual signature that you use (i.e. maiden name) if you have never been married before, or your normal legal signature if you have been married before.

Do I have to change my name after the ceremony (bride)?
If you adopt the groom’s name after the wedding, there is no legal requirement for you to register this name. However, you will be required to produce a certified copy of your marriage if you wish to change your name with financial institutions, on your passport etc. This certificate can be obtained from the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages after your wedding.

Do I have to pay a deposit for your services?
Yes. If you are satisfied after our first meeting that I am the Celebrant for you, I require a $100 non-refundable deposit. The balance of my fees is to be paid one or two weeks prior to the wedding, usually after the wedding rehearsal.
